deux: it must be done

Enjolras has not held a musket since the barricades. However, there's no time like the present. Through trial and error and various annoyed thoughts directed to the closet in his rooms, he has found one that will suffice. It feels ...strange, to have one in his hands again, to know that not so long ago he had held one and killed more than once with it. But he is pushing aside any lingering apprehensions he may have and heading outside to the shooting range some helpful person had set up in the recent past. Perhaps no one will bother him here, he hopes, it is fairly far afield; and the whole purpose he has will make it difficult to have any conversations.

The slight tension in his shoulders may belie his earlier anxiety, but it has not affected his aim as of yet. Should anyone follow the sounds of gunfire, they will find Enjolras as well, loading, firing, and reloading his musket with some determination.

"I have opinions about all those things."

"Oh, do you?" He quirks a small grin at Magnus. "I would be interested to hear them, in that case."

"Well, kings are bad, obviously," says Magnus, who was named after one. "As are people who uphold unjust laws and policies, like pretty much every single police officer in the world. And in most of the other Nine Worlds, too. People are dicks to the homeless and they shouldn't be. I can keep going?"

“I think you and I will get along quite well, monsieur.” It’s getting a little hard to hide the grin that is fixing to burst through. “My friends and I used to discuss this sort of thing all of the time at home.”

[summerdude]

"Yeah?" Magnus says, eagerly. "Tell me about it?"

[untamedantinous]

“There is much to tell, but in short: we revolted against an unjust king; who refused to fight for his people and help them though they were starving. Among other things.”

Oh, right; the entire revolution. Magnus makes a mental note not to tell Enjolras about the French Republic's hijab ban just yet. But if Sam ever shows up, he'll caution Enjolras to be careful about the France talk around her. "You mentioned the rebellion," he nods. "Were all your discussions about that?"

“The meetings were, yes, but we all got together outside of meetings most of the time anyhow. Our group was called the friends of the abased.¹. But we also all studied at the university, for the most part.”

¹ The mansion translator does not convey the greatness of the pun. Rest assured, it’s a delightful one.

"So what did you talk about when you weren't talking about philosophy?"

[untamedantinous]

“At the meetings? Everything, generally. The rights of the people, our plans, strategies, royal charters, where to acquire weapons, how much of a disappointment Lafayette was…” He could go on for hours if Magnus lets him.

“It is one of the many reasons I find it to be too quiet here.”

"Oh, I actually meant outside of the meetings!" Magnus says. "Because it sounds like you hung out a bunch. But... yeah. This place really is quiet, huh?"

[untamedantinous]

“I mean; if we are honest, it’s more of the same. But sometimes it would be classes and the like. Grantaire preferred to send his time otherwise.” He nods.

“It is, yes.”

[summerdude]

"Oh yeah?" Magnus prompts. Grantaire is the guy who held Enjolras's hand, he remembers. He wonders what the story is there.

[untamedantinous]

He waves a dismissive hand. "Billiards, drinking, --art, I think? He and a few others would often dine together."

[summerdude]

"Food is good," Magnus says. "You know, I bet if we had more communal meals here, it would feel more... lively."

[untamedantinous]

"It might, yes, but it may also feel like school." He shrugs a bit. "Also I can't imagine who would cook for such a thing, I am certainly not an option."

[summerdude]

"Is that a bad thing?" Magnus asks. "And couldn't the fridges just supply everything?

[untamedantinous]

"Not for me, but I don't know, some people may not like it." He shrugs again, rolling his shoulders some. "Yes, I keep forgetting about those. What are they called?"

[summerdude]

"Fridges," Magnus says. "At Valhalla, everyone ate dinner together. Well, we did it in three shifts, because there were tens of thousands of us, sorted mostly by age at time of death. And the thanes got triple dinner, I guess. But it worked out really well, actually, you know? You kill each other in the afternoon and then split a nice dish of Saehrimnir at night."

“A fridge,” he says thoughtfully. “Thank you. I suppose we might do that, should we put it to a vote, you think?”

[summerdude]

"Love a good vote," Magnus says. "We could totally do that. We could also put up signs saying it's happening and people can show up if they're interested."

[untamedantinous]

"That does seem easier than figuring out where to even hold a ballot box."

[summerdude]

"That's me, dude," Magnus says. "Solutions guy."

[untamedantinous]

"I shall make a note of it," with some amusement. "Perhaps I shall come to you for all my problems." He's quite obviously teasing. Well, it's obvious to him, at least. "Are there any other things you can think of?"

[summerdude]

"Oh, I have tons of solutions," Magnus says. "If anyone would ever ask me back home, I think I could fix a lot of stuff. I don't know how much relevance they have here, though. I don't think land ownership and carceral systems are things that even exist in this place, for example." He considers. "I guess we could have a World Religions class here, though. Since it seems that everyone has a different pantheon, or I guess a different interpretation of christianity, and that seems to be the ripest source of misunderstanding in a place without clear ruling class and their militias. I mean, police forces."

He is, in truth, trying to impress Enjolras a little bit with his opinions, but he also firmly believes in everything he's saying.
