open: don't let the wine go to your brains

It shouldn’t be this hard to prepare for a meeting. He’s done it countless times before. However, this time, it somehow is difficult. He’s never really had to set things up at times like this; and he knows as well as anyone else that he is not the best at social niceties. Granted, this meeting is in a much more well-appointed cafe than any he had ever been accustomed to holding space in in Paris. At least they have the benefit of a larger space. Consequently, Enjolras has spent much of the day of the eighth of Menestheus preparing, a little uncertain of how to plan a social gathering that is not immediately centered around planning a revolution. He is trying his best, at least.

Most of the tables and chairs have been pushed a bit more to the center of the room; the couch is arranged off to the opposite side. There are even various pillows scattered about, should anyone choose to sit on the floor. Arranged on a few of the larger tables and the counter there is a modest spread of food: of course, some of Laertes and Galahad’s pastries; but Enjolras has also procured what amounts to a few charcuterie platters: sliced sausages and meats, a selection of (mostly French) cheese, and various sliced loaves of bread and crackers are laid out for perusal, and spreads to go along with them. In an effort to provide multiple options of entertainment, Grantaire has set up a table somewhat near the food, with an assortment of wines and liqueurs. Off to one side, there are a few pots of brewed coffee, cream, sugar, and whatever else anyone might like to add to their beverage of choice. If anyone is drawn to the liquor cabinet, they will find three cups filled with various pieces of paper sitting atop it.

Enjolras himself is lingering on the couch with a glass of wine and some bread. He’s not sure how many people were even informed about this gathering, though he had done his best to advertise. If no one arrives then perhaps he will try again another time; but at least a few in attendance other than himself and Grantaire would certainly be welcome.

"Bold, sir," sounding very pleased about it. He has another drink of the wine -- without knowing anything about wine he knows it's good, by virtue mainly of the flavor, which is fruity and complex -- and lets Dionysis get a good look at the line of his throat when he swallows; he knows he looks good.

“Whoever I like best? Sweetheart, I don’t think people are supposed to pick favorites in their own family.” He laughs. “Especially not my family. That’s a good way to start a war or something.”

He laughs, shaking his head ruefully. "You're right. They're your family. I may be an idiot, but I'm not that kind of idiot. How about... something about Athena."

He thinks this is maybe not a very bad place to be trapped for all eternity after all.

“Well, you know what they say about who fortune favors, after all.”

"I have heard something about that, but sometimes I like a practical demonstration for clarity's sake."

It's strange (or perhaps it's not) how after these periods when he's miserable over something, losing Janet or switching with Asmodean or Mordred's visit or whatever stupid thing, flirtation makes him feel so much better. It reminds him that he can be someone who isn't a misery to be around, that there's still playfulness and happiness left in him. He likes Dionysus perfectly well; he likes that this is another way to get to know him, and perhaps come to like him better. Dionysus seems to have about as much godly authority as Aziraphale does, frankly, but the humanness is rather charming.

More the point, he's never been kissed by a god before.

Laertes has heard the term therapy from Magnus, but magnus says a lot of things that he doesn't particularly understand, and Laertes has more or less learned to roll with it. Dionysus, he thinks, may have new insight on a form of catharsis that is neither dramatic nor induced by a tonic. "What is therapy?" Laertes asks.

"Alright, big sister Athena." He thinks for a moment. In truth he hasn't spent much time with her; aside from certain specifics of their birth they have little in common. Personality-wise. "She's... tall."

He sips his wine.

"Oh! She did weave some incredibly lovely fabric for me once. I'd show you, but it went missing with the rest of my luggage."

He will never stop being bitter over this, he's sure. Regardless of whatever new clothes the gods of this mansion might have in store for him.

What is therapy asks Laertes from Hamlet. What is therapy indeed. Dionysus isn't so heartless as to laugh, but there's a small part of him that can appreciate the absurdity of this entire conversation.

"It... well, it can be a lot of things. There's physical therapy, so doing stretches and such when you've suffered an injury, to help it heal. There's also therapy to help with emotional conditions. Ahhhh, in the future from your time, it's a big thing. If you've had something traumatic happen and need to talk to someone to get your feelings out, or maybe advice on how to cope with things, there's -- sort of like going to a doctor? A professional you'd meet with, to sort of just chat."

Can you tell he's also never actually been himself?

"That's unfortunate. Maybe it will turn up one day. All right, what was living with Apollo like?"

"Apollo's great! I was gone a lot of the time, you know how I am, but whenever I wasn't off traveling somewhere I was back at Delphi. That, ah, that was his temple. He's very good when it comes to planning, and he's great to have around in a pinch. I think people assume he's going to be sort of uptight, but you should have seen some of the parties we threw with the oracle ladies."

Dionysus shrugs. "There's something to be said for confiding in a friend, that often helps too. I think the benefit of it being a professional is that first off, they're less likely to steer you in a... less than healthy direction, when you need advice. And secondly, if it's someone removed from your personal life you might be more inclined to speak openly."

He can't help but burst into laughter. He was right there at good planner and great to have around in a pinch, definitely with 'sort of uptight', but then the oracle parties completely throw his mental image into very odd places. "I would not have imagined that." So now, of course, he has to purge his brain of the image of Enjolras partying with a Delphic oracle.

His smiles spreads through Grantaire's description. "Compellingly reasoned. And flattering only due to an incidental drawing together of themes, I'm sure. I don't know how much either of us embodies joy. Crowley suffers from the same cynicism you do ... by which I mean he's a frustrated idealist. One who fell in with a group that started a rebellion, and he happened to get swept along with it. And myself, well, all that needs to be said is I'm a character from a tragedy." He rolls his eyes in an overdone, self-deprecating way. "But he did inspire me to laugh more often at the utter absurdity that is God's creation. So you could say he embodied joy for me. I think the genre of my life changed when I met him."

Claudius laughs, half-startled by the familiarity of the greeting. After all, Claudius greets one of his best friends with a formal exchange of names while standing six feet apart, and only recently have they progressed to hugging. But he finds he doesn't mind the attention from Dionysus. He evenly gamely pats Dionysus's back. "A party could hardly fail with you in the company."

That much, at least, Laertes understands all too well. He tries to imagine confiding his deepest fears and insecurities to Ophelia--let alone to his father--and his mind rebels at it. Ophelia has burdens enough, and he knows full well that his father would have a great store of (often contradictory) advice that would bring him no ease. The mere act of needing something from them is horrifying. Repulsive.

"I see why such people are needful," he says, after a long moment. "Self-reflection can lead one down well-trodden paths, but seldom blaze new ones."

"He's not in Eden, and you're not in your tragedy. Whatever you were written as, you've both found joy here, and that's a perfectly good thing. If the two of you do share a spirit, maybe your spirit figured you both deserved some joy. That said, cynicism and joy are hardly mutually exclusive." He takes a drink of his wine. "But at the risk of another comparison anywhere near as tenuous as mapping the barricades to the Fall, who do you suppose I'd share with?"

"Ah, so that's less your style, then. You're the one they don't see coming because you're beneath their notice. That's useful in deposing a tyrant," Claudius says in the blithest of blithe tones.

"Well that depends on the makeup! Sometimes it's fairly easy and straightforward, but sometimes if it's for a particularly involved role they might have to do something like glue a prosthetic on, or do a very detailed paint job, or both! We used to just wear masks, but times evolved and now it's something of a rarity for a production to have masks at all."
