untamedantinous: (downcast)
[personal profile] untamedantinous
A wildfire burns quickly and hot until it is extinguished. In some cases, Enjolras' passion has been likened to a fire. Here at the mansion that fire tends to be mostly banked; but the embers remain. It is easy enough to stir it into wakefulness; and Enjolras' dreams of late have done just that. (They have passed, now, but the burning need to do something remains.) So he is in the café as he usually is, sat at a large table with various piles of writings strewn about.

Off to the side, one might note a flier that is still obviously a work in progress, set off to dry a bit while he works on something else. The general air of disarray suggests that he has certainly been here for hours at least, though he does look a good deal happier than he had the last time he had taken refuge in the café. The warmth and fire of his passion has awoken another familiar friend: writing like he's running out of time.1 It is in truth very much what he would be doing in Paris, and there is a relaxed pleasure that is evident in the way he sits, in making himself feel useful even if it is for goals of his own making.

He has clearly been at it for some time, fingers inkstained and coffee grown cold beside him. There is a copy of The Social Contract open in front of him, and every so often he makes a thoughtful noise, writes a few things down, then turns to the next page. It is truly only a thought exercise that he's working on, a passing fancy to abridge a work that he is already intensely familiar with; but he appreciates the challenge. It is entirely different from the other, more private writings he has been working on, which are kept in a small notebook currently buried under all those sheets of paper. Regardless, the work pleases him --though the coffee does not. He picks his cup up to take a sip, makes a face, and rises to go start himself another.

1 Wrong musical, same vibes.

When Enjolras returns to his table, he'll find Claudius already there, sitting at the edge with a glass of wine in one hand and the flier in the other. "So this is the work of a revolutionary," he says cheerfully. "You're in your element, Enjolras. It's good to see you motivated."

"I draft the opposite way," he says, thoughtfully sipping his wine as he turns the plain flyer in his hand. "My first draft is a wild garden gone to seed; I weed out whatever's unnecessary in the second. If you're to describe what's best and brightest in your meetings, you might need to write with a little more passion. Perhaps even use an exclamation mark." He smirks. "Or recruit Grantaire. He never lacks for passionate words."

Claudius grins; he likes Enjolras sharp. Sharpness is a sign of passion. “That’s where you’re wrong,” he says. “If there’s no passion in the handbill, how will anyone know to be interested? How will they understand what you’re trying to create? Your best and brightest may not be here, but certainly they’re your inspirations. Let them inspire you. Think of Jehan’s poetry, Combferre’s science, Bahorel’s love of argumentation.” Lest you forget, Claudius has parasocial friendships with all of them. “Or Grantaire. You really ought to use Grantaire. He’ll enjoy being useful to you.”

"Enjolras," Claudius says with due seriousness, setting the flyer down. "That is so in keeping with your character that it makes it the most endearing thing you could have told me. I feel as though I should've been able to predict it. The fact that I didn't and yet was utterly unsurprised to hear it only adds to its charm. Also, you should have your abridged copies printed and handed out at your first meeting -- it makes a useful introduction to the philosophies you're passionate about, and it's a thoughtful touch."

Claudius ponders the puzzle, but he naturally drifts towards the personal one rather than the philosophical one. When Grantaire toasted to Enjolras, it was as their leader and the sun all their meetings wound around -- but Enjolras is so insensible of the effect he has on other people, he might not realize it.

Nevertheless, Claudius is going to tease him about it. "Enjolras," he says and smirks, "I see why you're struggling so much to express the draw of your meetings in a handbill. You were the draw. You never had to make up a schedule, or prepare discussion topics, because you inspired everyone around you with your charm and conviction to keep the conversation going."

Claudius tilts his head and sips his wine, considering this invitation to discourse. "Let me put it this way. I have a great interest in poisons. For many reasons, but after reading Mr. Darwin's theories, I'm even more interested in poison as an adaptation -- a trait that certain plants possess, and through possessing, survive and flourish in circumstances where other plants fell prey to foragers. Because of my interest, I've studied more, I see more. Where someone else may only see yellow flowers, I see deadly henbane. Deadliness isn't visible to the eye. It's visible in its effects, but those effects are only known once you've familiarized yourself with forms and patterns. Then you'll see the whole history of conflict on the edges of a garden, the back and forth between plants and pests, the casualties and victories of evolution. But you have to know where to look ... and if you aren't interested, you aren't looking. You'll miss something. In that regard, human relationships aren't that different from poisons."

Susan, passing briefly through the cafe to refresh her tea on her way to finalizing her notes on what to include on her census of residents, lifts the flier carefully with her fingertips to see what it says. Oh, this poor man with his absolute disregard for all but the most utilitarian function of an item! Someone must enable him to see that attention to detail is to be desired in cafe construction and advertisements alike.

As Enjolras returns with his fresh coffee, he will see Susan setting the flyer back down. She will be giving him a look that is kind, yet rich with pity. "You shan't attract many to your little salon with a notice like this, I'm afraid," she will say.

Respectfully, I rather think that half of everyone here would turn away at the burden of 'any and everything' being on the table for discussion, and even for those interested in revealing the deepest recesses of their souls, that's a promise of far too little structure to engender confidence that it will be an organized event."

Enjolras had said no such thing! Perhaps that claim occurred in a different linearity. "You needn't apologize," Susan says, with a light roll of her eyes. If you'd like to inspire people to attend, you might provide a list of example topics of conversation, or the type of debate to which you're referring. If you intend to use a flyer to advertise your meeting, rather than inviting people verbally in a setting in which they might ask clarifying questions, it's best to provide enough information that they might make an informed decision."

It's been ever so long since she's truly been in her element, and she would so like to bring Janet a tale of a triumph. In truth, she's a little offended that he seems to be brushing off her genuine and sage advice. She could offer to make it a competition, and come up with a better advertisement than Enjolras and muster a greater crowd, perhaps? But she has no interest in such wastes of time, so she sets the thought aside.

"You haven't got a speck of interest in what attracts people to a space beyond the most central basics, have you?" she asks, curious enough to set aside her idle considerations of sparking some sort of reaction. "No affinity for ambiance or mood."

Men! Why are they all - well, almost all - so useless and self-centered? "It seems to me that focusing on matters you quite literally cannot affect anymore is a fool's errand, when instead you might focus on other concerns that are actually addressable here, with the people within. To wit: sparing a thought for the comfort and needs of the people who are actually here. If you wish to create a space that is open and inclusive, you might possibly consider ensuring that it is inviting to more than just your own simple self."

She pushes her chair back into place. She shall make tea in the kitchens. "Good day, sir. Best of luck with future endeavors."

Susan sighs huffily. The house absolutely does not address the needs of all its inhabitants! If it did, there should be no need for psychoanalysis! It would be as miserable as the Aslan's Country that Lucy described! What is the point of anything if you cannot work actively to improve your environment?

She'd thought Enjolras an interesting young man during their first meeting, but she's been wrong before and this shan't be the last time, either. The least he could do would be to look interested in debating the issue! And why must men be so insistent on apologizing for things that absolutely don't matter? Tastes needn't align; her point was merely that assuming one's tastes to be universal is a recipe for disaster!

She strides off with no further acknowledgement.

He pauses. "Moths." It takes a moment for him to gather his thoughts, as it was very much not a topic he was expecting. "All right. The lowly cousins of butterflies. Blessed with the same general form but lacking the appreciative reception. Regardless, there is much to appreciate. After all, what they are perceived to lack in natural beauty, they make up for in a definite taste for fashion. Also, they appreciate and are always seeking spots of brightness in the world around them. When I think on it, perhaps I have a great deal in common with them."

It's met with a laugh. "Oh, I hold no such pretensions. I am more likely to compete with a moth itself. Grow wings and antennae and fly at a nearby flame."

"I shall do my level best to avoid immolation, although if you do see me begin to sprout wings, let me know so that I may take special care."

"Well, the mansion could have a day when it turns us all into animals1," he points out reasonably2. "Although I do admit that it would be unlikely for me to enter a moth stage without wrapping myself in a cocoon first. I should probably be careful with my bedsheets."

1 Silly R, if fursona day happens, you're not gonna be a moth, I promise you.
2 Only here could that actually be reasonable.

He grins. "You must admit that there are any number of things that have happened here that you would have called me absurd for hypothesizing before they happened. Although I will admit a cocoon unlikely, apart from perhaps in a metaphorical sense."

"Precisely!" He grins. "And as I am also unfathomable, it follows that my peculiarities have become wisdom."

He laughs. "I will not take it as one. I fear even I have my limits and to try to outstrip this place would be a folly well beyond them."

"Of course I would. It's part and parcel of being human. Foolishness makes us so much more interesting."

"You're allowed to be as skeptical as I'm idealistic," he says cheerfully. "And I would temper your 'some are not' with instead saying sometimes they are not. And determining which times are which makes the fate of common causes an interesting game of chance."
