“Indeed,” with a small smile. “A good sovereign might, in fact, do that. France has had few of them in recent years. Something else is needed in such a case, and thus my friends and I fought for a republic.” He considers Claudius a moment, sipping at his wine absently.

“Some would tell you a republic is just as bad as monarchy. I prefer to think that man is capable of learning from past mistakes and changing.”
